Tourism Profile: Atimonan Original Dances

Dancing in its native or ethnic form is one of the most exciting and appealing aspects of a country's culture that can as well be presented as tourist allure. The color, costumes, music, setting and skill or form of execution add to the appeal. Like other places of the country, Atimonan has native dances that depict our own identity, practices and traditions. The combination of dancing and ethnic music is a part of our culture that needs to be developed and preserved.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE SPANIARDS CAN BE CLEARLY SEEN IN THE ORIGINAL DANCES OF ATIMONAN CLASSIFIED AS RURAL AND MARIA CLARA DANCES. WITH THE EFFORT OF THE LUPONG TAGAPANGASIWA NG KULTURA AT SINING SA ATIMONAN (LUPTAKSA) AND THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT UNIT OF ATIMONAN, THESE DANCES ARE NOW RECORDED ON VIDEO COMPLETE WITH MUSIC.

ATIMONAN DANCES NAMELY – POLKABAL, PUTRITOS, JARDINERA, JOTA PANDANGGO, TANDA DE VAL, PASTORELLA AND GARAMBALWERE CAREFULLY DANCED AND INTERPRETED BY ATIMONAN COMMUNITY DANCERS, THE ATIMONAN LGU-DYD DANCE TROUPE, WHO MADE EVERY OCCASION IN THE MUNICIPALITY MORE COLORFUL.

Polkabal and Putritos were already published and the remaining five other dances were taught by Mrs. ROSALIA V. CARDOSO, a retired teacher who was the daughter of the original dancer and composer of the music – Mr. GREGORIO V. VILLACRUEL. The basic steps and dance movements reflected a very reserved, modest but sophisticated Filipinas. Theme of the dances was mostly about courtship, love of nature and the everyday activities and pastime of Atimonanin.
